ALORS  PRÊTS À RELEVER LE DÉFI ?     ARE YOU READY FOR THE CHALLENGE

WHEN YOU ARRIVE IN SAINT-PIERRE

The activities in Saint-Pierre  make even the most difficult racing conditions well worth the effort. There is always an on-the-jetty banyan and welcome party to greet arriving yachts.  Crews participate in the Sailor’s Parade to the Mayor’s office and attend the traditional tree-planting and reception. The same  evening there is usually a reception, barbeque and dance, open to the sailors and their families and friends, and  the whole town. One afternoon, people ashore can see the competitors in action as the harbour is the scene of the Grand Prix Race.

Each year the Canadian Navy provides a warship to accompany the race, She is  available in case of emergencies. This ship comes into harbour following the race and is open to visitors. A special feature of the 2008 race festivities was the visit of Bluenose !!, This replica of the original fishing schooner, whose image appears on the Canadian dime, was in Saint Pierre 17-19 July 2008, and was  the setting for several race related activities and unveilings.

Route Halifax Saint-Pierre  attracts yachts from around the Maritimes, Quebec, France  and the United States. It is now an  established fixture on the racing scene of eastern North America. (24 August 2008)

The idea of a race to Saint Pierre has been  talked about for some years. On 19 December 2001The Commodore of Yacht Club de Saint Pierre and the President of the Premier Class Association met  to discuss the organization and conduct of a July 2002 race to Saint Pierre et Miquelon from Halifax. A concept for the event was established and agreed to by the YCSP and PCA executives.  A logo was designed and donated by AA Design studios. The RNSYS was invited to participate in the organization of the first and subsequent events. The NSYA gave its support to the event on 26 January 2002

Twenty yachts finished the race in 2002, thirty in each of 2004 and 2006, and twenty in 2006
