Sponsorship

Halifax BMW is the new signature sponsor for the Premier Class Yacht Racing
Association.  President Edward Backman announced last week that Halifax BMW
would sponsor the class which will enable us to update our online services
significantly to enable better communication with our membership.  We're
also available on Facebook for real time communication for members-let us
know who's racing and join in on the sailing conversation.  We are pleased
to welcome back the Binnacle which has generously donated second and third
prizes for the inshore series racing for the entire season.  Photographer
Lynn Gray will be providing the First Place Prize for each PCA inshore event
this season.  Lynn will be on the race course with us shooting pictures in
the heat of battle.  The winner will receive a beautiful photo of their boat
to enjoy.  And we are pleased to welcome Doyle Sails as a sponsor for the
2011 racing season.

A big Flat Screen TV is up as a participation prize this year (thanks to the
efforts of PCA VP Grant Machum), Premier Class competitors will receive a
ballot each event they attend-so attend often-the draw for the big TV will
be held at our Annual General Meeting this fall.

The Premier Class Racing Season kicks off Saturday May 28th under the
auspices of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron opening regatta. The Notice
of Race is here:

Premier Class has some exciting new boats in the fleet, Mark Surette is expected to bring
his new J/111 (a sistership won its class in Key West this winter) and Will
Appold has a brand new Farr 30 (Mumm 30), competition should be tight.  Good
luck and good racing everyone; skippers meeting is at 10:00 at the Squadron.

Annual PCA Championship Schedule

SCHEDULE for 2011

There are some changes in the schedule this year notably no requirement for a distance race to decide the Overall Class Champion for 2011. The season champion will be determined by the best FIVE (5) finishes of the 8 Race season schedule comprised of 6 inshore regatta’s and 2 offshore races this summer.

The Qualifying Races shall be:

Inshore Series

Opening Regatta RNSYS - May 2 8-29
Opening Regatta Dartmouth YC – Jun 10-12
Opening Regatta Bedford Basin YC – June 17-19
Metro Race Week Jul 29 – Aug 1
Chester Race Week Aug 10 - 13
Prince of Wales Regatta Weekend (POW and Wenonah combined) Sep 10- 11

Offshore Series

Marblehead Halifax Race July 10 http://www.marbleheadtohalifax.com/  Lots of good information on the website, from safety requirements to entrants. While Marblehead is raced under New England PHRF, results will count for the Offshore and Overall Championship in 2011. We’d like to thank Jamie Oland and Evan Petley-Jones whom addressed the PCA Annual General Meeting to discuss Marblehead requirements.

Convoy Cup - Date TBD

Premier Class will also have an Offshore Champion this year for the best results of the two offshore races.  The NSYA has graciously offered to sanction a cup and share in the cost of the Davies Cup, in memory of Hal Davies, a co-founder of Premier Class Racing 11 years ago.  Premier Class and sailing lost a great friend when Mr. Davies (Third Wave)  passed away February 15th, 2011 in the Bahamas.  The Davies Cup to recognize Hal’s fondness for Ocean Racing will be awarded to our top performing yacht in the Premier Class Offshore Series.

Premier Class adopts PHRF Nova Scotia as the official handicap system http://nsya.ns.ca/phrf-racing/phrf-ns.html for the 2011 Yacht Racing Season.  Last year Premier Class embraced a trial period with PHRF NS handicapping, after using New England PHRF since its inception 11 years ago.  This decision was reached by majority vote at the 2010 Annual General Meeting at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, January 20th, 2011.

In cooperation with the Nova Scotia Yachting Association Premier Class has established a handicap review committee to review handicaps throughout the season.  This PCA Committee will report its findings to the Association and make recommendations to NSYA for decision.  This marks a new day in bringing Premier Class into a close working association with NSYA where both groups will have input into making our Association more inclusive in decisions that affect our class racing.  NSYA was invited to attend the 2010 PCA Annual General Meeting and Frank Denis attended and joined in the discussion with some good ideas and embraced the handicap review committee and offered Premier Class a chair in the NSYA Handicap Committee.  This PCA Handicap Review Committee will be chaired  by Andre Corkum, a knowledgeable, fair minded sailor with lots of Ocean Miles under his deck boots and many years of real world experience.  We welcome Andrew to the PCA team, we’re lucky to have him.

PCA SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS

Sandy Nicholson,  PCA President reported these results:

Congratulations to the venerable C&C 37R Third Wave wins the 2009 Premier Class Yacht Racing Championship Trophy.  The Class Champion is selected by a weighted (total number of PCA sponsored regattas attended) average using the RORC Points Table based Cox Sprague system shown on our website page "Race Schedule 2010" (click here to view).  The result rewards the boat(s) that sailed all or the highest number of events with the best finishes.  Third Wave (Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron) and her crew competed in every event. Well done Hal Davies and his crew.

Second Place winner in Premier Class was Ed Backman’s Farr 11s canting keel More Trouble, a new boat to Halifax this year.  More Trouble (Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron) showed her transom to the fleet in many races this season and highlights how fast the newest in technology can go with a canting keel, twin dagger boards, twin rudders and a retractable propeller. Pretty to watch on the race course.

Third Place was won by Nathan Reece and his crew aboard Climax a 1Design 35 (Dartmouth Yacht Club).Climax showed consistent speed throughout the summer and impressive performance when the breeze was on.

Detailed Scores for the Season Championship are on the 2010 Reuslts Page click here
